[DIY] Timepiece

Friday, July 29th, 2011

I kicked off my shoes, sank into my couch and reflected on what to do next… while looking at each item I’ve curated so far, an annoying ticking sound kept robbing by chain of thoughts in it’s tick tock hum that soon turned into a voice: “not, nice, not, nice”

And there is was. My very next project. Surgically dissemble my clock, reuse it’s vital organs in a complete new face :) and this is the picture that I’ve used as inspiration for my “after” surgery picture.

While taking advantage of this sale season, I roamed into Country Road (V&A Waterfront) and saw that they were using slices of trunks as part of their visual merchandising. With some bargaining skills, I managed to persuade the manager to let me have a few. The large piece is to become the clock, and the little pieces to be used as a placement pieces for my glass vases.

Making a clock is really simple. If you don’t wish to recycle your current clock, you can get the clock mechanism quite easily, use your own silhouette or base, and join the pieces together. See detailed instructions on how to place the pieces together here.

Happy Friday tick-tocking!

Oh my deer…

Monday, July 25th, 2011

A friend of mine recently completed this quirky artwork for her home, and the deer silhouette was so strong, it was glued on my mind for weeks. (see her site)

This little deer has become my obsession! Here are lovely pictures of how people have styled their apartments with antlers and horns.

As much of a fan I am of these beautiful antlers, I can’t resist thinking about the pain that these peaceful creatures might have endured. Our lovely local designer from Cape Town, Joanna Orr from Head on Design has a range of animal sculptures made from recycled board.

A whimpy lover of antlers like myself, will surely love Jo’s work!

[DIY] Inspirational Pallet Bed

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Last month I was searching for small wooden crates to use as display units at a market. The only shape I could find were tomato crates made of chipboard, which wasn’t ideal for me. I tweeted my dilemma, and a kind tweeter directed me to the fruit market in epping. I was awed by the the place, it was thousands of squaremetres of warehouse, with different vegetable traders that only sold in bulk pallets. I found no crates, but I found millions of pallets! I made a note to find inspiration on what to do with pallets, and here it goes……

Colours and Textures with Kate Spade

Monday, July 11th, 2011

There is a well known statement with interiors which is “less is more”. Personally, I do love uncluttered interiors, and love that pure karma that comes along with it.  The “less is more” philosophy works for those that prefer it, and that kind of concept is easy to achieve. One, keep to your neutrals. Two, store nearly everything away.

One misunderstanding that comes from the “Less is More” concept is that colours, textures and patterns cause the clutter. That misconception is often true since the art of mixing colours, patterns and texture is a true art. While I was pondering on this, I was thinking who could inspire colours. And as soon as colours and patterns came into my mind, I thought of Kate Spade’s clothing range. I did a bit of snooping on her and was lucky enough to find images of the designer’s apartment in the big apple here.

Kate Spade's Apartment

Kate Spade’s home is a perfect example of how conventional laws of colours and patterns can be broken, and put together in a way that unique personality flaunts around the entire space.

I found these images really inspirational. I love the bold colours, interesting patterns mixed with stunning classic silhouettes. Kate Spade launched a beautiful bedding range this year (see them here), as well as a few homeware pieces.

[DIY] Project Planter

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

We’re moving soon, and I have been looking for ideas on how to make a structure to limit my little dachshund in a enclosed garden. The garden leads directly into a canal, where ducks paddle peacefully. To keep the peace amongst the duckies, I need to keep my little sweet monster, Koji, from a nasty duck massacre!

I was looking for ways to enclose the garden area and I found this stunning idea here.

DIY Planter

How sweet is this idea? and it’s a just a few simple steps:

1. Concrete blocks

2. Soil

3. Plants

I love the idea for using succulents, they’re not high maintenance plants, and a fabulous survivor. If you are great with plants, you can also consider planting herbs in these pockets. Happy Friday!

White Decor Fix

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Today I bring you to the home of photographer, Birgitta Wolfgang Drejer’s home. Birgitta has accumulated a stunning portfolio of stunning homes. She hasn’t released any images of her own home until recently. All images released have been taken by the photographer herself.

I call this piece the white decor fix because I’ve had to say this serveral times: “Hi my name is Cindy, and I’m an absolute white spaces junkie“. I have been mocked by a friend who has often told me that I will deprive colours for my future seedlings, which may potentially inhibit their mental growth.. eeeek! But this beautiful home reinforces my addiction to white spaces, you can’t not love it!?!

The home’s entire mood is absolutely dreamy. Modern, yet inviting, and holds key pieces that builds character to the space.
